The Georg Fischer GF 1600 is a hydraulic butt fusion machine built for high-precision jointing of large-diameter polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) pressure pipes and fittings, covering the range from d1000 mm to d1600 mm. It is intended for utility networks, municipal water distribution, industrial infrastructure and open-trench pipeline installation, where joint integrity and repeatable fusion parameters must be maintained under demanding site conditions.

The basic machine is built on a rigid, distortion-free aluminium chassis inclined at 45 degrees, which improves operator ergonomics, visibility of pipe alignment and access inside narrow excavations. The four-clamp configuration is adaptable: the outer clamping ring can be removed to weld in confined trench sections or to hold short-spigot fittings, stub flanges and tees. Clamping and alignment remain rigid throughout the bead-up, heating and cooling sequences, eliminating axial displacement and misalignment.

Movement is driven by a hydraulic unit operating at pressures up to 200 bar, metered through joystick control for fine cylinder motion and measured clamping force. An integrated hydraulic accumulator holds pressure stable through the critical cooling phase, compensating for thermal contraction without pressure drop. The electrical system is managed by a centralised control box covering all functional and safety circuits, with a total connected power of 55000 W (55 kW) at 400 V three-phase supply.

Facing and end preparation are carried out by a heavy-duty electric parallel planer with double-sided reversible blades and a mechanical safety microswitch that prevents start-up outside the machine frame. The heating plate provides electronically controlled temperature distribution across the full fusion face and carries a durable non-stick PTFE coating, with a heating power of 47000 W (47 kW).
