The Georg Fischer Type 586 pressure retaining valve is a direct-acting control valve that holds a constant backpressure upstream and protects industrial piping networks against overpressure peaks. It works without external power: the valve opens as soon as the upstream line pressure exceeds the setpoint and closes progressively as system pressure falls, keeping process conditions stable in chemical dosing loops, distribution headers and pressurised treatment lines.

The adjustable setting range runs from 0.5 to 9.0 bar (7 to 130 psi), giving fine regulation in both continuous and intermittent duty. The body is moulded in post-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (PVC-C) in agate grey RAL 7038, a compound that combines high mechanical rigidity with thermal performance at operating temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius under pressure. The wetted geometry remains chemically inert against aggressive mineral acids, concentrated alkalis and reactive salt solutions found in chemical process, electroplating and water treatment installations, where standard thermoplastics and metal valves degrade quickly.

Internal sealing relies on a PTFE/EPDM diaphragm, the fluoropolymer face forming the chemical barrier while the elastomer backing provides the elastic recovery. Secondary sealing is by EPDM or FKM O-rings, selected to match the medium carried. This configuration is supplied with metric plain spigots for solvent cement socket jointing, covering pipe diameters from d16 mm to d63 mm. The adjustment mechanism houses a protected, non-wetted spring assembly and an ergonomic adjusting screw for repeatable field calibration, while stainless steel threaded inserts at the base of the body allow the valve to be anchored directly to a bracket, so that piping stresses are not transferred into the plastic assembly.
